Spiritual awakening does not consist of learning new information or acquiring particular belief systems. When we awaken spiritually we don’t add anything, but we let go of everything. All of us have, throughout our journeys, acquired certain mental and behavior patterns as well as certain ways of perceiving the world that are unique to us. Yet so often our personalities are made up of a bundle of conditioned reactive patterns, defense and coping mechanisms that we may have mistaken to be our true selves. As we awaken to our essence, we find we gradually release all of that. We let go of the conditioned patterns, we let go of clinging to perceptions, and we open ourselves to seeing Life as it is. We learn to use our senses beyond the five senses. We begin to hear with the Inner Ear and to see with the Inner Eye. In moments of tremendous insight, peering beyond the veil of appearances, we may recognize that all experience of lack, limitation and scarcity is always the result of some lesser perception—misconceptions that have temporarily manifested as miscreations. And so rather than complaining about darkness and thus perpetuating it, we turn on the Light. Then the Light that is us shines forth, illuminating everything in its path. This is how we become a blessing not only to ourselves, but to everyone whose lives we touch. This is what it means to be the Light of the world.
